The Genoa Aquarium Foundation was founded in 2003 thanks to the participation of private entities and public institutions, and is placed under the high surveillance of the Liguria Region.
The Foundation's main objective is the protection, correct management and active safeguard of threatened aquatic ecosystems. This objective is pursued through education, dissemination and awareness-raising actions among the general public and institutions, with applied scientific research projects and a particular attention to social and cultural aspects.
Information and awareness on the conservation issues of aquatic environments in general and the Ocean in particular are also primary objectives.
The Ocean, covering over 71% of the surface, is in fact the “life support system” of the planet, an invaluable heritage of biodiversity, resources and culture. Managing it sustainably and protecting it also means not compromising it for future generations.
The idea of creating the Acquario di Genova Foundation was born from the realization that, all together, we can join forces to protect and enhance the aquatic environmental heritage in a sustainable way. The experience, initially gained by the Acquario di Genova, represented an important starting point for the development of the activities of the Foundation, which has undertaken a multitude of initiatives for years, even at a global level.
Faced with growing threats to the oceans, the Foundation has decided to take an active role, promoting a variety of research, education and conservation projects to protect the planet we live on.
Ocean conservation requires a multidisciplinary approach involving scientists, politicians, businesses, communities and citizens. The Acquario di Genova Foundation, through its research, education and awareness-raising activities, is committed to promoting a culture of sustainability and building a better future for the Ocean and aquatic environments. A challenge we cannot afford to lose.
We don't just study the ocean, we act to preserve it. We are at the forefront of the fight to protect marine ecosystems. Our projects, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals , aim to create a positive and lasting impact by protecting biodiversity, fighting pollution and promoting sustainable practices.
