Coral Project - Maldives

Coral Project - Maldives

Active 2004-2010

The Coralli – Maldives project consists of a series of activities that have evolved and differentiated over time. At the beginning, the project was mainly developed as a support to the activities already underway by the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (CEMT) of CONISMA and the DIPTERIS of the University of Genoa. Various in situ missions were activated, supported by the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus and ex situ research activities on various coral species in collaboration with Acquario di Genova – Costa Edutainment SpA. The research and monitoring activities, aimed above all at following the evolution of bleaching in the Maldivian atolls and the progression of environmental recovery, were also supported by some workshops and various conferences organized also in collaboration with the Associazione Amici dell'Acquario. The Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus also awarded two scholarships to two graduates for the study of nutrition and development of ex situ corals. The project involved the assessment of the effects of the tsunami on the Maldivian coral reefs and gave rise to a dedicated exhibition in collaboration with the Genoa Aquarium – Costa Edutainment SpA.
