From 2022 – ongoing
In 2022, after a High Level Discussion Summit, The Ocean Race decided to promote a process to arrive, by the end of the UN Decade for the Ocean (2030), at a Universal Declaration of Ocean Rights. The Earth Law Centre, the Municipality of Genoa and the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus immediately joined the project. The planned process to arrive at a definition of the Principles of Ocean Rights, which form the basis for dialogue between States in the UN context, has been officially called the “Genoa Process”.
In 2022, The Ocean Race includes the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus in its Core Group for the development of the Principles of Ocean Rights and the Municipality of Genoa signs an agreement with the Fondazione Acquario di Genova to have specialist scientific assistance for initiatives related to the events of the race.
In 2023, a representative of the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus participates in five events organized by The Ocean Race Core Group on Ocean Rights, as part of the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon.
In 2023, the Core Team of The Ocean Race, as part of the Genova Process, after numerous Summits attended by the UN Secretary General, Heads of State, Heads of Government, Ministers, Special Envoys, Ambassadors, NGOs, the World Bank, the IUCN, scientists and sports champions, after numerous international workshops and an international campaign that covered all parts of the Ocean (including Relay4Nature and One Ocean Voice), finally presented the Principles of the Rights of the Ocean to the UN General Assembly in New York. The principles are the basis for discussion and negotiation between States in order to arrive at the definition of a Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Ocean by the UN by 2030. The Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus participated in the entire Genova Process, up to the Workshop and Summit at the UN. The project for the Rights of the Ocean has been recognized in the context of the EU Missions – Restore Our Ocean and Waters.
