Active since 2006 – ongoing
Since 2006, the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus, together with the Associazione Amici dell'Acquario Onlus and the Acquario di Genova – Costa Edutainment SpA, have annually launched various information and awareness initiatives on the occasion of June 8, World Ocean Day established by the UN. World Ocean Day is an annual opportunity to reflect on the problems of the Ocean in various parts of the planet and on the need to protect its biodiversity and ecosystems.
The initiatives, different every year, have included conferences (also held by people who have carried out important activities in the sector, such as Folco Quilici) and activities outside the Aquarium (such as television broadcasts on the Maurizio Costanzo Show), as well as many specific articles in various newspapers.
In 2009, the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus, together with the Associazione Amici dell'Acquario Onlus, dedicated the day to a large meeting and conference on Operational Oceanography, together with the GNOO and the Historical Oceanography Society.
In 2018, World Oceans Day was first celebrated with a conference in Genoa, together with the Associazione Amici dell'Acquario, and then in Rome, together with The Garbage Patch State, with the presentation of a large exhibition by Cristina Finucci on the theme of plastic in the ocean at the Fori Imperiali and the Campidoglio.
In 2021, a conference was held with the Friends of the Aquarium, a conference with the Lions Club of Rapallo and a Conference with the Rotary Club Golfo Paradiso. The pdfs of the initiatives were also passed on to the EU4Ocean group. The Spinger Publishing Group asked the Foundation to act as a testimonial for Ocean Day in relation to the achievement of goal no. 14 established by the UN for sustainable development: https://www.springernature.com/gp/researchers/sdg-programme/sdg14/dinatale-blog
In 2023, World Oceans Day was celebrated at FAO headquarters in Rome, together with the heads of FAO, UNEP and The Garbage Patch State, in a large conference that was also well attended by public institutions.
