Active from 2004 to 2009

The Antarctic Project was a research activity conducted by the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus through an agreement with the Museo Nazionale Antartide, within the missions managed by the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA), thanks to a specific Convention. The Project also had the technical and personnel support of the Acquario di Genova – Costa Edutainment SpA. In particular, the project envisaged the development of missions in Antarctica, with personnel specifically trained by the PNRA, in order to collect and transport Antarctic marine organisms to the Acquario di Genova, where an environment was equipped with dedicated thermostated tanks, also to allow ex situ biological studies by researchers from the University of Genoa – DIPTERIS. The missions were all carried out successfully and the method adopted for the transport of Antarctic marine organisms proved to be effective and successful, allowing all the collected organisms (fish, echinoderms, coelenterates and molluscs) to arrive in excellent condition in Genoa, despite the very long journey.
