As part of the activities aimed at promoting integral sustainability in the use of aquatic resources, the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus established the international ECOCREST© brand ( https://www.ecocrest.org ), officially registering it in November 2006. The brand was presented to the press with a press conference, sponsored by Berbrand srl, Centro Tessile Cotoniero ed Abbigliamento SpA (Oeko-Tex) and Alvaro e Correnti – Arte Orafa Messina, accompanying an exceptional exhibition on the use of pearls and mother-of-pearl in modern goldsmith art. In 2007, two presentations were also organized during the Slow Fish edition, while an in-depth technical presentation was held at the European Commission – DG Fishery, which considered the ECOCREST© standard in the context of the future establishment of the European “Green Label” brand.
The certification activity has evolved over the years, becoming more refined and increasingly demanding. Currently, the ECOCREST© certification is considered one of the most sophisticated and serious in the world, especially for its approach that takes into account the aspects of integral sustainability, including aspects of solidarity and inclusiveness from any point of view, but also for having pioneered the idea of a blue circular economy, with the full destination of royalties to conservation, solidarity or education projects.
