Active since 2004 – ongoing

The “Genoa and Its Sea” Project is made up of a set of activities that have the main objective of improving the relationship between Genoa and the sea in front of it, also by promoting environmental improvement activities of the quality of water and ecosystems and by developing information and awareness-raising activities for various bodies and the public. As part of the project, in 2007, a professional video was also made “Genoa, Aquatic Metropolis.

The project involved several coordination meetings between the partners, to decide the priorities of the actions. An experimental intervention of pure oxygen injection was carried out in a section of the Porto Antico of Genoa, in order to reduce the impact of odors in a highly touristic area, which gave good results.

Since 2005, an information project on the quality of coastal waters has been activated, with information panels based on ARPAL data, initially placed on the beaches of Nervi and Vesima. The project has then further transformed, becoming an action to inform and raise public awareness on life in coastal waters, through large panels placed on various stretches of the Genoese coastline (“Sai cosa c'è sotto”). This part of the project was active until 2011.

Since 2018, the project has activated the monitoring of the waters around Ponte Spinola, in order to follow the evolution of the quality, with particular attention to the identification of untraced discharges. The monitoring continued until 2020 and materialized in a report with the analytical data that was distributed to all partners, so that each could develop the interventions of their own competence.

Since 2020, a specific reporting action of anomalous events has begun, which has resulted in numerous inspections of the mouth of the Rio Sant'Anna Canal by the Municipality of Genoa and IREN.

In 2022, the project promoted a PhD that gave rise to a separate experimental project for the biotechnique recovery of the quality of water and sludge of the Porto Antico of Genoa.
