A concrete tool to become an “Ocean Citizen”

Active from 2004 to 2012.

All the seas communicate with each other forming a single World Ocean. Most of the inhabitants of our Planet have a passport; it is a symbol of national belonging, a document issued by the authorities of each country, which certifies identity and nationality. The Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus and the Aquarium of Genoa, together with all the members of the international network World Ocean Network of which they are part, recognize the existence of a new country, the World Ocean, and consequently created the "Passport of the Citizen of the Ocean". Since 2004, you can become a Citizen of the Ocean thanks to a Passport reserved for those who act concretely even through small daily gestures for the protection of the Blue Planet. Eight billion small actions can have an impact on its conservation! The Ocean concerns us all because our future depends on its state of health. The II c of the Durazzo middle school in Genoa was the first class to be given the passport on June 8, 2004.

The following Italian institutions collaborated on the initiative: Genoa Aquarium, WWF marine oases and turtle recovery centers, Cattolica Aquarium, Genoa Science Festival, Naples City of Science, Archaeological Parks and MPAs of Baia and Gaiola (Naples), Cleaning of beaches and seabeds (Operazioni Mare Pulito) Genoa, Ligurian Fisheries and Environment Observatory, Liguria Region, Legambiente, Ocean Future Society, A come Ambiente Association, Natural History Museum of Turin, Municipality of Genoa - Department of Territory and Environment, Emys Center (Leca d'Albenga) for the reproduction of the Ligurian tortoise, World Ocean Network.
