Active since 2003 – ongoing
In the context of this theme, which had already been activated by the Genoa Aquarium – Costa Edutainment SpA with various national and international initiatives, the Genoa Aquarium Onlus Foundation has decided to intervene in areas of excellence.
In particular, in 2003, based on a request from BerBrand srl, the project “Eco-friendly and supportive Mother of Pearl” was developed, for an innovative model based on the circular economy without waste and with positive impacts on coral reefs for the use of shells for the primary production of mother of pearl, in Vietnam, Micronesia and Eritrea. The project, absolutely innovative in its complex construction, which considered not only environmental and production aspects, but also social, solidarity and economic ones, won ex-aequo the first edition of the 2006 Impresa Ambiente Award, in the category “Best International Cooperation for Sustainable Development”.
Since 2018, the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus has had its own representative in the UN Sustainable Fishery Team of Specialists in Geneva, appointed by UNECE. In 2021, the Team developed an international standard (FLUX) ( https://unece.org/trade/uncefact/unflux#accordion_1 ) to transmit fishing data to Governments and RFMOs to ensure sustainable management of fishery resources.
Since 2021, the Acquario di Genova Onlus Foundation has participated in the UN Team of Specialists (ToS) on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Traceability of Sustainable Value Chains in the Circular Economy in Geneva, appointed by UNCEFACT.
Since 2023, a representative of the Fondazione Acquario di Genova Onlus has been designated to support the European Union DG-MARE delegation at the meetings of the Scientific Committee (SCRS) and the ICCAT Commission.
