Active from 2017 to 2019

The project, funded by the European Union, which was coordinated by Soc. Dalula Marine SL of Barcelona, aimed to create a new thematic tourist route celebrating the iconic status, cultural heritage and economic importance of bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean area, initially focusing on Cadiz (ES) and Sicily (IT). The project achieved participation in existing public initiatives led by individual project partners (such as La Ruta del Atún in Cadiz, Spain, and Girotonno, in Sardinia, Italy) bringing a dimension of transnational cooperation and developing an international network focused on nautical and maritime activities.

The Tuna Route has re-evaluated traditional tuna fishing activities and the individual locations where they are present, while also generating sustainable and higher quality jobs. It has also diversified tourism strategies by also promoting maritime sports, sport fishing, boating and marinas. The planned thematic itinerary brings together science, conservation, culture, gastronomy and aquaculture. Several thematic workshops have been held in Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The Acquario di Genova Onlus Foundation has ensured an important specialist and scientific component within the project's Steering Committee.
